Manfred Schmidt (* 1959 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German lawyer and administrative officer . From 2010 to 2015 he was President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and is Vice President of the Federal Office of Administration.

Life

Manfred Schmidt studied law at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main from 1981 to 1986 . From 1986 to 1990 he did his legal preparatory service in Frankfurt and received his doctorate in 1990 at the university there.

Schmidt began his work in the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) in 1990 as a consultant in the administrative organization department and was employed in the area of municipal assets in the new federal states . In 1994 he switched to the management department of the ministry and in 1995 to the organizational unit, from 1997 he was head of the budget unit and later became the budget officer . From 2002, Schmidt was the permanent representative of the head of the central department, and in 2004 he took over the management of the central department. From December 2007 to December 2010 he headed the department for crisis management and civil protection at the BMI. As a civil servant at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, he initially worked in Bonn and since 2000 in Berlin .

On December 1, 2010, Schmidt succeeded Albert Maximilian Schmid as President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), which as a higher federal authority is part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The BAMF is based in Nuremberg and has 22 branch offices in Germany (as of January 2014). Due to the high number of asylum applications, the workforce rose from around 2,200 employees in January 2014 to around 2,800 employees in May 2015. In 2015, however, the BAMF came under increasing pressure in connection with the refugee crisis in Europe . Both the backlog of around 250,000 unprocessed old applications for asylum and serious misunderstandings about announcements about the possible suspension of the Dublin Agreement in the course of the crisis met with incomprehension in Germany and other European countries.

Schmidt resigned from his position as President of the BAMF on September 17, 2015. The Federal Ministry of the Interior announced on the same day that Schmidt had asked to be released from his duties for personal reasons. Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière ( CDU ) immediately complied with this request. He has been Vice President of the Federal Office of Administration since 2017 .

Manfred Schmidt is married and has two grown children.
