  • Hyderabad / India : At least 27 pilgrims are killed in a mass panic triggered during the Hindu Maha Pushkaralu festival in the state of Andhra Pradesh , in which thousands of believers want to take a bath in the Godavari River at the same time .
  • Space : The US space probe New Horizons passes the dwarf planet Pluto and its moon Charon . This is the first time that detailed photos of the two celestial bodies are created.
  • Vienna / Austria : The UN veto powers as well as Germany and Iran find a solution to the nuclear dispute after long negotiations . The sanctions are expected to end soon.

  • Athens / Greece : The members of the Greek Parliament vote with a large majority in favor of initial austerity and reform measures such as the increase in VAT and the introduction of a pension reform, which the lenders made a condition for talks about new financial support in the billions. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is dependent on the votes of the opposition when it comes to voting, as many MPs from his Syriza party either vote against the legislative package or abstain.
  • Mount Hagen / Papua New Guinea : During tribal fighting in a remote region of the Western Highlands Province , several people are killed and others are injured.

  • Baghdad / Iraq : In the city of Khan Bani Saad, northeast of Baghdad, an alleged ice cream seller murdered at least 120 people in a suicide attack. The terrorist organization ISIS later claimed on Twitter to be responsible for the crime.

  • Berlin / Germany : The 14th European Maccabi Games begin. The official opening by Federal President Gauck on the following day is attended by around 10,000 spectators in the Waldbühne Berlin .
  • Strasbourg / France : In protest against falling prices, which barely cover production costs, French farmers in Alsace are blocking agricultural imports from Germany. The protest is also directed against competitive disadvantages, as labor costs in neighboring German agriculture are significantly lower thanks to the use of Eastern European harvest workers.

  • Conakry / Guinea : In Guinea, the possible Ebola vaccine VSV-EBOV successfully passed the field test on 4,000 test subjects who were reliably protected from infection with the virus after ten days of contact with newly infected people . According to the World Health Organization, more studies are needed to find out more about the vaccine and how to fight the Ebola virus .
  • Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia : The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awards the 2022 Winter Olympics to Beijing . Thus the favorite prevails against the only remaining competitor Almaty from Kazakhstan . China's economic strength speaks for Beijing, which is the first city to host summer and winter games . Olympic opponents criticize the water scarcity and lack of snow in the region, the danger of smog and the catastrophic human rights situation in the repressive political system.
  • New Delhi / India : India and Bangladesh exchange over 100 enclaves in their border area . This will give the previously stateless 52,000 residents of these areas citizenship. Only around 1000 residents have moved from the Indian enclaves to their mother country, the residents of the Bengali enclaves without exception take on Indian citizenship.
