Suruç ( [ˈsuɾut͡ʃ] ; Aramaic ܣܪܘܓ Sĕrûḡ , Kurdish Pirsûs ) is a city and at the same time the name of a district in the Turkish province of Şanlıurfa in southeastern Anatolia . The city of Suruç has 57,878 and the district 102,109 inhabitants (as of 2008). Suruç is a predominantly Kurdish city in the southwest of the province and borders Syria opposite the city of Kobane .

In ancient times the city was called Batnae and was the main town in the Anthemusia region (cf. Amm. Marc. 14, 3, 3: Batnae municipium in Anthemusia conditum Macedonum manu priscorum, from Euphrates flumine brevi spatio disparatur). In 115 Trajan subjugated the place because the local dynast Sporakes refused to submit (Cass. Dio 68, 23, 2; Eutr. 8, 3, 1; Fest. 20, 2).

The border town of Mürşitpınar , located in the district, gained international fame through the battle for Kobanê .

On July 20 , 2015 , there was an attack that left 34 dead and more than 100 injured. The Turkish Interior Ministry blamed the Islamic State for this.

In September 2016 , the incumbent mayor Orhan Şansal was replaced by a state official by decree for allegedly supporting a terrorist organization. Şansal then went underground and fled to Germany via Bulgaria to apply for asylum there.
