African elephant
  • Africa : The result of the Great Elephant Census ( German  large elephant count ) is published. The scientists and animal rights activists involved assume that 350,000 African (steppe) elephants currently live in and outside of reserves, while for 1979 they assume a population of 1,300,000 individuals. That would be a decrease of 73%.
  • Berlin / Germany : With a change of the book price law (BuchPrG) which applies in Germany book prices , with few exceptions now available for e-books . The decisive factor here is not whether the retailer is based in Germany, but whether the sale takes place within the country's borders. Only temporary access, for example via a monthly rental price, is not included in the price maintenance.
  • Caracas / Venezuela : Between 100,000 and 500,000 people demonstrate for a referendum to vote on the new parliamentary elections . In contrast to previous actions against the government of the United Socialist Party , this time there are also many people from poor sections of the population among the Protestants.

  • Düsseldorf / Germany : North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Ralf Jäger declares the state's cooperation with the largest Islamic association in Germany, Ditib , to be over. Ditib's comments on a comic that glorifies martyrdom in Islam are decisive .
  • Kabul / Afghanistan : At least 24 people die in three attacks. An attack on the aid organization Care International ends with the death of the three attackers. The Taliban are considered to be the originator of the acts of violence .
  • Tartus / Syria : In a double attack by the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) in the port city, at least 35 people die and 43 others are injured. The city is located in the area controlled by the Assad government and has a naval base for the Russian Navy. Another 15 people died on the same day in attacks in the predominantly Kurdish al-Hasakah , in Homs and in the suburbs of Damascus .

  • Aleppo / Syria : Media reports on air strikes on Idlib and Aleppo that killed dozens of civilians, and CNN Turk reports that the Turkish air force killed 20 IS fighters in other locations .
  • Baghdad / Iraq : A double attack in a shopping center in Baghdad kills at least ten people and injures another 30.
  • Beit Saadan / Yemen : 30 people are killed in an air attack by the Gulf Cooperation Council as part of the military intervention in Yemen on a water well under construction in the village. The United Nations-led peace talks for Yemen in Kuwait ended on August 6, 2016 after three and a half months without an agreement, and since then the fighting has increased again.
  • Großrückerswalde / Germany : In an airplane accident during a party at the Großrückerswalde airfield, two people are killed when an ultralight aircraft collides with a glider in the air.
  • Loreto / Peru : An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 M w shakes the north of the country.
  • Mecca / Saudi Arabia : The great pilgrimage ( Hajj ) begins. Believers from Iran are not allowed to make a pilgrimage to Mecca this year. The cause is an inconclusive dispute between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which was primarily about entry conditions and the number of participants.
  • New York / United States : The German tennis player Angelique Kerber wins the women's singles at the US Open for the first time with a three-set win over the Czech Karolína Plíšková .
  • Suwon / South Korea : Samsung Electronics urges all buyers of smartphones Samsung Galaxy Note7 on the definitive closure their device and to the company returned .   • Damascus / Syria : The ceasefire in the Syrian civil war is running out and will not be extended. The fighting is taking on the same intensity as it was before the ceasefire. Homs and Aleppo are again targeted by air strikes. One of them is aimed at Urem al-Kubra, 10 km southwest of Aleppo, against a convoy of relief supplies from the Red Crescent . At least one person is killed in the process. 18 vehicles are destroyed.
  • Kinshasa / DR Congo : According to human rights activists, 44 people die in clashes between demonstrators and the police. The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of President Joseph Kabila after his term of office ends in December 2016 and no postponement of the presidential elections.
  • Melbourne City / Australia : The Port of Melbourne is privatized. The Lonsdale Consortium is awarded the contract for A $ 9.7 billion (the equivalent of around 6.5 billion euros) and leases the container port for 50 years. The Australian sovereign wealth fund Australian Government Future Fund , the Canadian pension fund Ontario Municipal Employees' Retirement System (OMERS) and the Chinese sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corporation (CIC) each have a stake of 20% . The remaining 40% is shared by several investors, including US funds and a pension fund from South Korea .
  • Moria / Greece : A fire destroys 60% of the facilities of the refugee camp on the island of Lesbos . 3,000 refugees from the camp spread out in the area. The police arrested 18 migrants the next day on suspicion of incitement to riot and arson .
  • Tobruk / Libya : Six people died when a Mil Mi-8 helicopter of the Libyan armed forces commanded by Khalifa Haftar was shot down .
  • Shanghai / China : The Baosteel conglomerate announces the takeover of Wuhan Iron and Steel , making it the second largest steel company in the world.
  • Ashgabat / Turkmenistan : Ashgabat International Airport opens for 14 million passengers a year.

  • Amman / Jordan : In the parliamentary elections, the secular Ma'an list landed with a little more than 2,000 votes ahead of the Al-Islah list , which is supported by the Muslim Brotherhood .
  • Kinshasa / DR Congo : The clashes between security forces and demonstrators, who are calling for the resignation of President Joseph Kabila , continue. The headquarters of three opposition parties are set on fire. At least two people lose their lives.
