List of federal referendums

The list of federal referendums shows all referendums at the federal level since the foundation of the modern Swiss federal state in 1848 . The votes came about on the basis of:

Because the federal popular initiative is always one to amend the constitution (and not of laws), it requires  a number of cantons ( BV Art. 140 I lit. a) in addition to the popular vote (BV Art. 140 I lit. a), whereby six cantons (formerly called half-cantons ) are required historical reasons only have half a professional vote. The same applies to mandatory referendums and direct counter-drafts, as these become necessary when the constitution is changed by parliament (BV Art. 140  I lit. a).

Optional referendums, on the other hand, concern federal laws and important international treaties which only require a majority to be accepted (BV Art. 140  I lit. a).

The Federal Constitution of 1848 "was not, however, a general federal Referendum submitted. Most of the cantons carried out one of their own accord, as some of them had already done in 1833 through the unsuccessful revision of the federal treaty ». At the time of the vote on the Federal Constitution of 1848, the Federal Treaty of 1815 was still in force, which contained no legal basis for carrying out such a vote; so this vote does not correspond to the definition of a real mandatory referendum .
