umverkehR (French actif-trafiC , Italian Straffico ) is a politically independent, transport policy environmental protection organization in Switzerland and is a member of the Swiss Climate Alliance . umverkehR has been committed to sustainable mobility since 1992. UmverkehR was based on the vision of halving motorized individual traffic. The main concern of umverkehR remains that traffic is reduced, more environmentally friendly and more space-saving.

Traffic halving initiative

Against the background of growing motorized individual traffic (roughly a six-fold increase between 1950 and 2000), the idea of halving this traffic arose in the federal constitution. For this purpose the association umverkehR was founded in 1992. In 1994 the Federal People's Initiative "Halving motorized road traffic to preserve and improve living spaces (traffic halving initiative)" was launched and submitted on March 20, 1996 with 108,857 valid signatures. The text of the initiative called for motorized road traffic to be halved within ten years of the initiative being adopted. The initiative did not specify the means to be used to achieve this goal.

The initiative was mainly supported by left-green circles, but also by individual liberals such as Christa Markwalder . The Federal Council and Parliament rejected the initiative. In the referendum on March 12, 2000, she was with 415'605 to 1'532'518 votes (votes share 21.3%) and in all stands rejected.

Other Projects

After the referendum, the association was involved in various campaigns and projects for “ecological, socially acceptable and future-oriented mobility”, for example against the Avanti bill or for a Lucerne light rail system.

  • In 2008, the so-called city initiatives were launched and submitted in the cities of Basel, Geneva, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Winterthur and Zurich, with the aim of limiting road capacity and promoting public transport. The city initiative was a success. The initiative was accepted three times (St. Gallen, Geneva and Zurich) and the counter-proposal three times (Basel, Lucerne, Winterthur).
  • The campaign «Place there!» promotes awareness of space-efficient traffic in cities. The “ PARK (ing) Day ” was held for several years as part of the campaign .
  • Due to the threat of dismantling various night train connections, the “Save the Night Train” campaign was launched at the end of 2014. Due to competition from the low-cost flight industry, the 2018 campaign was converted to “Train instead of flight”. The train, especially the night train, should become competitive again as a climate-friendly alternative to air travel.
  • As a follow-up to the foot traffic test in 2016, the GEHsund project - city comparison pedestrian traffic - was launched in 2019. Together with Pedestrian Traffic Switzerland and the Rapperswil University of Applied Sciences, the pedestrian friendliness of various Swiss cities is recorded and compared.
  • UmverkehR is currently preparing the launch of the so-called urban climate initiatives in several cities. On the one hand, they should protect the urban population from the negative effects of climate change and, on the other hand, promote climate-friendly, space-efficient transport.
