Robert Alwin Leopold Bauch (born March 21, 1897 in Berlin ; † June 21, 1957 in Greifswald ) was a German botanist , ecologist and geneticist .

Life

Robert Bauch graduated from high school in Berlin in 1915 and then studied natural sciences and medicine. At the University of Würzburg he received his doctorate in 1921 with a zoological topic . He then became an assistant at the Fermentation Physiological Institute at the Agricultural University of Weihenstephan .

From there, Robert Bauch moved in 1923 to an assistant position with Hermann von Guttenberg at the Botanical Institute of the University of Rostock . In Rostock he completed his habilitation in 1925. From 1925 to 1947 he taught as a professor at the Rostock University. The focus of his research was on plant physiological , ecological and genetic topics. In the 1930s he was a permanent scientific advisor to the State Agency for Nature Conservation in Schwerin . He worked here in particular on the establishment of water and bog protection areas and achieved the protection of various bogs . With a special interest in endangered and protected plant species, he took part in the photographic recording of the Mecklenburg natural monuments.

In 1946 Robert Bauch submitted proposals for the future organization of nature conservation to the new state administration. On February 22, 1947, he took over the honorary chairmanship of the “Leading Nature Conservation Agency for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania”, which existed until the administrative reform of 1952 . In the same year he followed a call to the University of Greifswald , where he headed the Institute for Plant Ecology and the Biological Research Institute on Hiddensee until his death .
