Christa Markwalder (born July 27, 1975 in Burgdorf ; resident in Würenlos and Zurich ) is a Swiss politician ( FDP ). She was President of the National Council in the 2015/2016 year of office .

politics

Markwalder is a board member of the FDP Switzerland . She is regarded as an exponent of the social or left- wing liberal wing of the FDP, for example in transport policy or as an advocate of a moderate liberalization of cannabis consumption ; she sees herself as a “ classic liberal ”.

As part of her work as a parliamentarian, she is currently a member of the Foreign Policy Commission of the National Council, the Pardon Commission and the Legal Affairs Commission of the National Council.

She is President of the Swiss- USA Parliamentary Association , President of the Ski Group of the Federal Assembly , Co-President of the Renewable Energy Parliamentary Group and Co-President of the Switzerland- Ukraine Parliamentary Group .

Political career and previous activities

Markwalder joined the Jungfreisinnigen and sat on the Burgdorf City Council (city parliament) from 1999 to 2002 . She was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern in 2002. She gave up the mandate in 2003 after her election to the National Council , whereby her father Hans-Rudolf Markwalder took her place in the Grand Council. From 2006 to 2014 she was President of the New European Movement Switzerland (nebs) .

After Simonetta Sommaruga was elected to the Federal Council , Markwalder ran for the vacant seat of the Bern Council of States in February 2011 . As third place in the first ballot , she announced that she would not.

Markwalder was elected second Vice President of the National Council in 2013, first Vice President in 2014 and President of the National Council on November 30, 2015.

Markwalder was a participant in the 2016 Bilderberg Conference in Dresden.

education and profession

Markwalder studied law and general ecology at the University of Bern and graduated with a licentiate and certificate for general ecology. She then worked as an assistant at the Institute for European and International Business Law at the University of Bern. She has been working as a lawyer at Zurich Insurance Group since January 2008 .

Private

Markwalder was married to the surgeon Walter Bär in 2003 and the couple separated in 2009.


Kazakhstan affair

In June 2013, Markwalder put a question to the Federal Council about Switzerland's relations with Kazakhstan . According to a report in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , the interpellation was written by the PR company Burson-Marsteller and its content was heavily revised in Kazakhstan. Markwalder denied having known that Kazakhstan was involved in the formulation of the text. Markwalder passed on non-public commission documents to the PR company in preparation for the interpellation. Since these did not contain any secrets, an application for the waiver of immunity was rejected by the relevant national and state council commissions.
