Albert Rösti (born August 7, 1967 in Frutigen ; resident in Frutigen) is a Swiss politician ( SVP ), entrepreneur and association official . From 2016 to 2020 he was President of the Swiss People's Party.

Life

Albert Rösti grew up in Kandersteg and studied agronomy at the ETH Zurich . In 1997 he did his doctorate there under Peter Rieder (speaker) and Bernard Lehmann (co- speaker) on the subject of "Effects of Agricultural Policy 2002 on Swiss Agriculture". He also graduated from the University of Rochester in 2002 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Rösti lives in Uetendorf , is married and has two children.

Professional career

Rösti joined the Economics Department of the Canton of Bern in 1998 and was Deputy Secretary General under Government Councilor Elisabeth Zölch from 2001 and Secretary General 2003–2006. He then became director of the Swiss milk producers. Since 2013 he has been the owner and managing director of Büro Dr. , which is active in the areas of public affairs, project management and consulting for business and politics. Rösti GmbH .

2007-2014 Rösti was President of the Agricultural Information Service (LID). In May 2014 he was elected to succeed Rolf Schweiger as President of the Action for a Sensible Energy Policy Switzerland (AVES) . In May 2015, Rösti replaced the resigned Caspar Baader as president of the umbrella association of fuel traders in Switzerland, Swissoil Switzerland . He is also President of the Swiss Water Management Association (SWV).

politics

Rösti was president of SVP Uetendorf from 2000 to 2007. Since January 2008 he has been a member of the Uetendorf municipal council . In 2014 he replaced the resigned Hannes Zaugg-Graf as mayor.

Rösti ran unsuccessfully in the Bern government council elections in 2010. He was first elected to the National Council in the 2011 parliamentary elections. There he is a member of the Commission for Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy (UREK) and the Commission for Social Security and Health (SGK) . In 2015, Rösti was the campaign manager of the SVP in the federal elections , in which he ran unsuccessfully for the Council of States.

At the beginning of November 2015, the board of SVP Bern nominated Rösti - according to its own statements, in order to check its support within the SVP with regard to later vacancies - as its Federal Council candidate, but withdrew the candidacy two weeks later.

On April 23, 2016, Rösti was elected the new president of the SVP, replacing Toni Brunner at the party leadership. After the SVP's poor performance in the 2019 parliamentary elections , he announced in December 2019 that he would no longer be available for re-election for the party presidency in August 2020. He was succeeded by Marco Chiesa from Ticino .
