Hans Uhlmann (politician)

Hans Uhlmann (born November 11, 1933 in Bonau ) is a Swiss politician ( SVP ). Uhlmann, a farmer by profession , left the national political stage in 1999 and now only works behind the scenes in the SVP. Before that, however, he had played a key role in shaping political events in Switzerland for many years.

biography

From 1964 to 1987 Uhlmann was mayor of Bonau and municipal councilor of Wigoltingen , from 1980 to 1984 cantonal councilor and from 1983 to 1987 national councilor . On October 18, 1987, Uhlmann was elected to the Council of States for the canton of Thurgau , to which he was a member until 1999. He was also chief judge from 1976 to 1992 .

From 1985 to 1989 Uhlmann was founding president of the SVP of the canton of Thurgau, from 1988 to 1996 president of SVP Switzerland.

Uhlmann's declared goal as national party president was to attract new groups of voters , and in particular to give former SP voters, who no longer feel represented by their party, a new political home. Under his leadership, the SVP was able to increase its share of the national vote from 11 to 14.9 percent.

Uhlmann is married and has two children.
