Marco Chiesa (born October 10, 1974 in Lugano ; entitled to live there ) is a Swiss politician , member of the Council of States and party president of the SVP .

Life and education

In 1999, Chiesa obtained his degree in business administration from the University of Friborg . In 2006 he obtained an Executive Master's Degree in Economics and Health Management from the Università della Svizzera italiana , in 2018 he obtained a Master's degree in Human Capital Management from the Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana .

From 2004 to 2008 he was an employer representative and a member of the pension fund for employees of the city of Lugano. In 2004 he founded the Associazione Asilo Nido il Bianconiglio, a non-profit association that runs two kindergartens. From 2010 to 2011 he was President of the Lugano Monte Bré Lions Club. From 2009 he presided over the Filarmonica Pregassona Citta di Lugano for five years. In 2015 he took over the office of Vice President of the Helvetia Latina Association. In 2017 he founded the Pro Infantia Foundation, which is also active in the kindergarten sector. In the same year he was appointed President of the Home Owners Association , Section APF-HEV Ticino.

He has been married since 2007, has two sons (* 2008, * 2010) and lives in Ruvigliana , Lugano.

Political career

In 2001 he was elected to the city council of Lugano. In 2004 he joined the legislative body of the city of Lugano. From 2005 to 2007 he held the office of cantonal vice-president of the Swiss People's Party. In April 2007 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Republic and the Canton of Ticino. In 2008 he continued his tenure in the legislative body of the city of Lugano. He is a member of the administrative commission in both a communal and a cantonal context.

During the legislative period 2011–2015 he was parliamentary group leader of the SVP in the Grand Council. In 2015 he chaired the Commission for the Control of the Public Mandate of the Banca dello Stato del Cantone Ticino. In the federal elections in October 2015, he was elected to the National Council, where he became a member of the Foreign Affairs Commission.

In 2017 he was elected President of the Swiss delegation for relations with the Italian Parliament. In 2018 he was appointed Vice President of SVP and Vice President of AUNS .

In the federal elections to the Council of States , none of the candidates achieved the necessary majorities in the first ballot. In the second ballot on November 17, 2019, he was elected to the Council of States with 42,552 votes together with Marina Carobbio from the SP as the first Ticino SVP representative; the longtime Ticino CVP representative Filippo Lombardi was unexpectedly not re-elected.

At the end of July 2020, Chiesa was proposed by the selection committee for the position of SVP President as the successor to Albert Rösti and elected without an opponent at the delegates' meeting on August 22, 2020.
