Federal popular initiative "for the introduction of direct federal tax"
The federal popular initiative "for the introduction of direct federal tax" is a Swiss popular initiative that was voted on June 2, 1918 and rejected by the people and the cantons. It was launched by the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland and had the goal of permanently anchoring the previously limited direct federal tax in the federal constitution.
background
The direct federal tax was originally used to finance military spending in the world wars. It was raised several times provisionally by urgent, generally binding federal decrees. This practice of circumventing popular rights was abolished on September 11, 1949 with the popular initiative «for a return to direct democracy». The federal tax, which is still limited in time, was periodically extended, the last time until the end of 2020.
