The company was founded in Qingshan in 1958 and was the first large iron and steel production complex in China . In 2015 the company produced 25.78 million tons of iron and steel .
In 2016, the also state-owned Baosteel Group announced the takeover of Wuhan Iron and Steel, making the entire company the world's second largest steel group after ArcelorMittal .
