The attacks in New York and New Jersey were three bomb attacks in New York and New Jersey on September 17 and 19 September 2016th

Sequence of events

At around 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, September 17, a bomb exploded in a pressure cooker in a garbage can in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York . 29 people were injured in the explosion.

On the same day, a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey. Initial reports saw a connection with the planned for that day running of the veterans of the Marine Corps .

On the night of September 18-19, a backpack with similar components and other suspicious packages such as the pipe bomb that had previously exploded in New York was found in Elizabeth (New Jersey) and detonated by an explosive robot during the defusing process. According to the authorities, a total of five explosive devices are said to have been found, but one explosive device in a pressure cooker did not explode.

After extensive investigations by the police and the FBI , a suspect was arrested in Linden, New Jersey. The naturalized Ahmad Khan Rahami (born January 23, 1988 in Afghanistan ) is said to be in connection with the attacks in New York and New Jersey and had an exchange of fire with police officers when he was arrested. Rahami was charged with fivefold attempted murder during the arrest, and charges against the attacks and the other explosive devices found were also prepared by the prosecution. In February 2018, Ahmad Khan Rahami was sentenced by a jury to life imprisonment.
