Octagon (2008)

The Oktogon (in address names Oktogon tér "Oktogonplatz") is an inner-city traffic intersection in Budapest . Here the Teréz körút section of the Great Ring Road ( Nagykörút , formerly Lenin körút ) overlap in a northwest-southeast direction and the Andrássy út , which runs at right angles to it .

At the Oktogon there is a tram stop for lines 4 and 6, a bus stop for line 105 and, under the square, a station for line M1 of the Metró Budapest .

Name and story

The name Oktogon refers to the octagonal design of the square through the buildings erected in the early 1870s according to plans by Antal Szkalnitzky . In 1936 it was renamed Mussolini tér (" Mussolini Square") and in 1945 November 7th tér (" November 7th Square " ), before being given its original name back in 1990.

Since its construction in the course of the city expansion at the end of the 19th century, the square has been one of the major traffic junctions between Westbahnhof and Pest City . Today it is the location of many ( fast food ) restaurant chains.
