- Baghdad / Iraq : The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) carried out several attacks in Iraq over two days, with at least 34 dead and around 68 injured. Including a double attack by two suicide bombers on the busy Al-Sinek market in the center of the capital and an attack on a checkpoint near al-Qadisiya .
- Berlin / Germany : The Care Strengthening Act III comes into force and 2.8 million people in need of care in Germany are transferred to a new assessment system. In addition, the law to strengthen the participation and self-determination of people with disabilities (BTHG) comes into force.
- Berlin / Germany : From now on, the regular use of trucks longer than 18.75 m ( EuroCombi ) is permitted in all federal states with the exception of Berlin and Saarland .
- Bern / Switzerland : New President Doris Leuthard ( CVP ) takes office.
- Ceuta / Spain : When around 1,100 African migrants rush to the border fence of the Spanish exclave of Ceuta in Morocco, more than 50 police officers are injured in clashes. Only two migrants reached Spanish soil injured and were taken to hospital.
- Istanbul / Turkey : At least 39 people are killed and over 70 others are injured in an attack on the Reina nightclub .
- Jakarta / Indonesia : On the way from Pelabuhan Kali Adem near Jakarta to Tleid, a holiday island in the southern Seribu archipelago , the ferry Zahro Express with 230 people on board catches fire. At least 23 people are killed and another 17 are missing.
- New York / United States : The Portuguese António Guterres takes over the post of Secretary General of the United Nations as the successor to Ban Ki-moons .
- New York / United States : Ethiopia , Bolivia , Italy , Kazakhstan and Sweden , new non-permanent members in the Security Council of the United Nations .
- Beijing / China : A law on the police supervision of foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) passed by the National People's Congress in April 2016 comes into force. Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch (HRW) are currently not allowed to operate offices in China.
- Sèvres / France : The International Bureau of Weights and Measures adds to 12:59 and 59 s Central European Time , a leap second in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Disruptive influences on the earth's orbit and rotation without UTC correction would mean that after 90 years the earth would only be at the point of a complete annual orbit of the sun with a delay of 60 s .
- Valletta / Malta : The six-month Maltese EU Council Presidency begins.
- Vienna / Austria : The 77th New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic will be conducted by conductor Gustavo Dudamel , making him the youngest conductor in the history of the New Year's Concert. Immediately after the New Year's Concert 2017, the Vienna Philharmonic announced that they had invited Riccardo Muti as conductor for 2018 .

- Baghdad / Iraq : In the northeastern part of Sadr City, the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) carries out a car bomb attack in which at least 32 people are killed.
- Manaus / Brazil : In the Anísio Jobim (COMPAJ) prison complex with over 1200 inmates, a revolt breaks out between inmates from rival drug gangs, killing at least 60 people. Several inmates are beheaded. Twelve judicial employees had been temporarily taken hostage and some prisoners had managed to escape during the revolt. Special police units and the military police were able to take control again after several hours.
- Mogadishu / Somalia : The Islamist al-Shabaab militia is committed to two suicide attacks in which at least seven people were killed at a checkpoint at the base of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) at Mogadishu Airport and 200 meters from the Peace Hotel .
- London / United Kingdom : The Dutchman Michael van Gerwen wins the final of the PDC World Darts Championship 2017 .

- Ankara / Turkey : The state of emergency that began on July 15, 2016 will be extended to April 19, 2017.
- Dresden / Germany : The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology (FEP) has succeeded for the first time in producing OLED electrodes from graphene . The process was developed and optimized in the EU-funded project “Gladiator” (Graphene Layers: Production, Characterization and Integration) together with partners from industry and research.

- Kidapawan / Philippines : Rebels from a splinter group of the Islamic Liberation Front of the Moros (MILF) have freed over 150 prisoners from a detention center in the province of Cotabato on the island of Mindanao . At least six prisoners and a guard are killed in two-hour firefights with security personnel.
- Saint-Louis / France : The former Prime Minister of Kosovo and commander of the Albanian UÇK , Ramush Haradinaj , is arrested by the French police at Basel-Mulhouse Airport on the basis of a Serbian arrest warrant. He is charged with war crimes during the Kosovo war.

- Erzurum / Turkey : A court sentenced two officers, a colonel and a major, to life imprisonment for the first time since the coup attempt in Turkey in 2016 .

- Bischofshofen / Austria : Kamil Stoch from Poland wins the 65th Four Hills Tournament in ski jumping ahead of his compatriot Piotr Żyła .
- Boa Vista / Brazil : 33 inmates were killed in a riot in the Monte Cristo prison . Gang wars are also increasing in overcrowded prisons.
- Fort Lauderdale / United States : Former US National Guard and war veteran Esteban Santiago shot and killed five people and injured eight others at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport before being arrested without resistance.
- New York / United States : Herero and Nama representatives file a lawsuit against Germany to seek compensation for the genocide of their ancestors. In what was then German South West Africa (today: Namibia ) 100,000 members of these peoples were killed by German troops between 1904 and 1908 .
Saturday 7th January 2017
- Ankara / Turkey : President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan orders the dismissal of a total of 8,400 state employees by decree. These include around 2,700 police officers, 1,700 officials from the Ministry of Justice and eight members of the State Council , 800 employees from the Ministry of Health and hundreds of officials from other ministries as well as around 630 university employees. In addition, suspicious Turkish nationals who are abroad can, under certain conditions, have their citizenship revoked.
- Aʿzāz / Syria : A tank truck loaded with explosives is detonated by unknown perpetrators in the center of the city in front of a courthouse. At least 43 people die and over 55 are injured. The city is under the control of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which is supported by the Turkish military offensive "Euphrates Shield" .

- Baghdad / Iraq : A suicide bomber from the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) carried out a car bomb attack on the Al-Jamila market in Sadr City, killing at least 12 people and injuring 26 others. Another suicide bomber blows himself up in Al Baladiyat, killing six people and injuring 13 others.
- Beverly Hills / United States : The film musical La La Land by director Damien Chazelle sets a new record with seven Golden Globe Awards won .
- Jerusalem / Israel : 4 Israeli soldiers die and 17 other people are injured in an attack in the East Talpiot district. The Palestinian bomber purposely drove a Mercedes-Benz truck into a crowd. According to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , it is said to have been a supporter of the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS).

- Geneva / Switzerland : The Presidents of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı and Nikos Anastasiadis met for another round of negotiations on the Cyprus conflict from January 9th to 12th, chaired by the new Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres .

- Benghazi / Libya : Islamist fighters of the Revolutionary Shura Council of Benghazi , which also includes Ansar al-Sharia , shot down a MiG-23 fighter aircraft of the Libyan Air Force near Ganfouda (Quanfouda) west of Benghazi with an anti-aircraft missile. The pilot was able to save himself with the ejector seat.
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : After 43 years of party membership, Erika Steinbach , a member of the Bundestag, has announced that she is leaving the CDU and the CDU / CSU parliamentary group . - Sydney / Australia : Around three years after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370), the Joint Agency Coordination Center (JACC) of Australia, Singapore and China has stopped searching.

- Davos / Switzerland : Start of the 47th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), which is expected to be attended by 3000 top politicians, business leaders and scientists. Chinese President Xi Jinping opens the summit for the first time.
- Karlsruhe / Germany : The Federal Constitutional Court ruled in the second NPD ban proceedings that the party “does not have the potential to eradicate democracy in Germany” and does not ban the National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD). The court recognizes as a right that parties in the Federal Republic may disregard the minimum principles of the free-democratic basic order defined by the Federal Constitutional Court in 1952, if they are far enough away from democratically legitimized creative power.
- London / United Kingdom : British Prime Minister Theresa May presents a twelve-point plan for the United Kingdom to leave the EU . This also includes the exit from the European single market .
- London / United Kingdom : The tobacco company British American Tobacco (BAT) takes over the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR), the second largest tobacco product manufacturer in the United States . The volume of the takeover amounts to 49.4 billion US dollars (the equivalent of 46.3 billion euros).
- Rann / Nigeria : At least 100 people are killed in a mistaken air attack by a Nigerian Aero L-39 or Alpha Jet fighter aircraft on a refugee camp near the border with Cameroon and Chad. The attack should have been aimed at fighters of the Islamist Boko Haram .

- Al-Bab / Syria : Turkey and Russia fly together for the first time in the Syrian civil war . According to Russian sources, 36 Islamic State (IS) targets have been bombed by 17 fighter jets (nine Russian and seven Turkish).
- Banjul / Gambia : President Yahya Jammeh refuses to hand over his office to his successor Adama Barrow , who was elected on December 1, 2016 . Barrow is due to be sworn in on January 19, 2017. Jammeh ordered a state of emergency . Meanwhile, Senegalese and Nigerian soldiers are preparing a military intervention as part of the West African Economic Community (ECOWAS) to overthrow Jammeh.
- Farindola / Italy : In an avalanche accident triggered by an earthquake, the mountain hotel Rigopiano on the slope of the Gran Sasso d'Italia is buried. At least 23 people die. 6 other people are still missing on January 26th. Eleven people survived the accident.
- Gao / Mali : In a car bomb attack by two suicide bombers of the Islamist al-Qaeda in the Maghreb (AQIM) at least 47 people die on a military base with the Coordination Office for Operational Cooperation (MOC). In the military camp, soldiers from the Malian armed forces are stationed with fighters from the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (CMA), who were allegedly considered by the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, to conduct joint patrols.
- Hamburg-Waltershof / Germany : The Customs Criminal Police Office (ZKA) confiscated 717 kilograms of cocaine with a street sales value of around 145 million euros from the container inspection system of the Waltershof customs office . The container with high-purity cocaine was on a ship that came from the Caribbean island of Curaçao to the port of Hamburg and was intended for transport to the Netherlands .

In total, the order includes around 280,000 units for the US Army alone and a further 212,000 units for the other branches of the armed forces worth around 580.2 million US dollars including ammunition and accessories.
- Les Sables-d'Olonne / France : The Frenchman Armel Le Cléac'h wins the Vendée Globe 2016/2017 in record time.
- Sirte / Libya : US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announces an air strike with two B-2 long-range bombers south of Sirte, in which at least 80 IS fighters are killed in a camp run by the Islamic State terrorist group . The US armed forces have carried out around 500 air strikes against IS in Libya from August to December 2016.
- Tehran / Iran : According to media reports, at least 30 firefighters are killed in a fire and the later collapse of the Plasko passage , the oldest high-rise building in the sixth district of the metropolis. 70 people are injured.

- Ankara / Turkey : The Turkish National Assembly votes with a majority of 339 votes in favor of the governing coalition of AKP and MHP for a package of 18 constitutional amendments with the aim of changing from a parliamentary system of government to a presidential system . At the beginning of April 2017, voters are expected to confirm the constitutional amendment in a referendum. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could then presumably rule with far-reaching powers until 2029.

Trump justifies this by citing ensuring the security and territorial integrity of the United States, as well as ensuring compliance with U.S. immigration laws to prevent illegal immigration , drug , human trafficking, and terrorist acts .

- Berlin / Germany : The members of the German Bundestag vote with 498 yes-votes and 55 no-votes for the further military deployment of the German armed forces to the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission of the United Nations in Mali ( MINUSMA ) until January 31, 2018. This increases Personnel limit from 650 to up to 1000 soldiers. In addition, the Bundeswehr is relocating four Tiger combat helicopters and four NH90 transport helicopters to Gao .

- The Hague / Netherlands : The Dutch Minister for Security and Justice, Ard van der Steur ( VVD ), resigns because of a judicial affair involving payments of millions to a drug dealer. The media revealed in 2014 that the Justice Department had covered up the affair and lied to parliament. His successor will be the previous Minister for Housing, Stef Blok (VVD).
- Deyelsdorf / Germany : The highly contagious H5N8 virus is confirmed in the poultry farm of Knops Putenmast KG in Deyelsdorf with around 40,000 turkeys . A restricted area is set up because of the avian influenza . According to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), bird flu is spreading further and now affects around 23 European countries.
- London / United Kingdom : The rating agency Fitch Ratings rates the creditworthiness of Turkey by one notch to BB + and thus from the investment area from. On September 23, 2016, Moody’s also assigned the corresponding level in the rating code.
- Pfullendorf / Germany : In the special operations training center (AusezSpezlOp) in the Staufer barracks of the German armed forces , seven soldiers are suspended from their duties because of dubious admission rituals (sexual-sadistic practices). - Washington, DC / United States : US President Donald Trump issues decree 13769 to ban refugees from Syria until further notice and to suspend the US refugee admission program for 120 days. An entry freeze for at least 90 days is ordered for those wishing to enter from Iraq , Iran , Yemen , Libya , Somalia and Sudan . American NGOs see the constitution of the United States as being violated by these measures and are announcing a lawsuit against the government.

- New York City / United States : The civil rights organization American Civil Liberties Union achieved an important partial victory in the fight against the entry bans imposed by US President Donald Trump . A judge at the federal district court for the eastern district of New York State, Ann Donnelly, has issued an injunction that people affected by the decree may continue to travel to the USA if they have a valid visa or a United States Permanent Resident Card ( Green Card), are under the protection of the US refugee program, or have other official entry permits.
- Taizz / Yemen : At least 30 people die and 10 others are injured in several air strikes by the Saudi Arabia- led military alliance against the Houthi rebels in Al Shouq and Mokka .

- Al-Baida '/ Yemen : In Wadi al Kifah in the al-Baida governorate , the US armed forces are attacking a base of the terrorist organization al-Qaida on the Arabian Peninsula with combat drones (UCAV) and SuperCobra attack helicopters as well as special forces from the United Arab Emirates ( AQAP). 41 al-Qaeda fighters and 14 civilians die. Among those killed are the leaders Abdulraouf, Sultan al-Zahab and Saif Alawai al-Jawfi. A US soldier from the Navy SEALs special forces unit is killed and three other US soldiers are injured in the crash of an MV-22 Osprey .
- Berlin / Germany : The SPD party executive nominates the former President of the European Parliament , Martin Schulz , as the top candidate in the 2017 federal election . Schulz has yet to be confirmed by party members, this is expected to happen in March.
- Berlin / Germany : The government spokesman for the German government , Steffen Seibert , announced that Chancellor Angela Merkel regretted the entry ban imposed by the US President on refugees and citizens of some countries. Merkel emphasizes in particular that the fight against terrorism does not justify placing people of a certain origin or belief under general suspicion.
- Damascus / Syria : During the civil war, the Syrian armed forces recapture the town of Wadi Barada, which has been occupied since 2012, with the drinking water source in Ain al-Fijah in the Qudsaya district from the Salafist Jabhat Fatah asch-Scham (formerly al-Nusra Front) and thus secure the water supply for the capital.

- Addis Ababa / Ethiopia : At the 28th African Union (AU) summit , Morocco is re-accepted as a member after 33 years (with the predecessor organization OAU ). Membership of the Democratic Arab Republic of Sahara (DARS), which was occupied by Morocco, was not revoked . The Chadian Foreign Minister and former Prime Minister Moussa Faki is elected as the new Chairman of the AU Commission .
- Avdiivka / Ukraine : In the city in Donetsk Oblast , fierce fighting broke out again between the Ukrainian armed forces and pro-Russian separatists from the Donetsk People's Republic . The OSCE observers recorded 2,260 violations of the current ceasefire within one day.
- Izmir / Turkey : In a further and extensive court process after the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016 , 270 people, 152 of them already in custody, are charged. Türkstat reports a decrease in income of 30% compared to 2015 to around 20.65 billion euros. With 3.76 million visitors, most of the tourists came from Germany , but their number decreased by 1.7 million compared to 2015.
- The Hague / Netherlands : The International Residual Mechanism for the Ad-hoc Criminal Courts of the United Nations (IRMTC), founded in 2010, calls on Turkey to release judge Aydın Sefa Akay by February 14, 2017. The one in September 2011 on the proposal of the Turkish government Judge Akay, who was appointed to the IRMTC, was arrested in the aftermath of the attempted coup in Turkey on September 21, 2016. According to court president Theodor Meron , Akay has diplomatic immunity .
- Luxembourg / Luxembourg : The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled in the case of the Belgian General Commissioner for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRA) against the Moroccan Mostafa Lounani that the guidelines for the rejection and expulsion of refugees in force in the European Union also apply to them who "undertake the recruitment, organization, promotion or equipping of persons" who commit, plan or prepare for acts of terrorism (Case C-573/14).
