  • Ankara / Turkey : President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan orders the dismissal of a total of 8,400 state employees by decree. These include around 2,700 police officers, 1,700 officials from the Ministry of Justice and eight members of the State Council , 800 employees from the Ministry of Health and hundreds of officials from other ministries as well as around 630 university employees. In addition, suspicious Turkish nationals who are abroad can, under certain conditions, have their citizenship revoked.
  • Aʿzāz / Syria : A tank truck loaded with explosives is detonated by unknown perpetrators in the center of the city in front of a courthouse. At least 43 people die and over 55 are injured. The city is under the control of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which is supported by the Turkish military offensive "Euphrates Shield" .

  • Zurich / Switzerland : FIFA has decided to increase the number of World Cup participants in the 2026 tournament to 48 instead of the previous 32 teams. Instead of the previous eight groups with four teams each, there will then be 16 groups with three teams each in the preliminary round.

  • Damascus / Syria : The Israeli armed forces attack the Syrian air base Mezzeh in the southwest of the capital with rockets. Four people are injured. According to media reports, the attack could have targeted a delivery of anti-aircraft weapons to the Islamist Lebanese Hezbollah militia. According to SOHR, which is close to the armed rebels, eight explosions occurred.
  • Detroit / United States : With an admission of guilt and fines, the Japanese auto supplier Takata was able to settle its legal dispute with the United States over defective airbags and accepts a fine of around one billion US dollars in a settlement. At least eleven people died because of defective airbags.

  • Benghazi / Libya : Islamist fighters of the Revolutionary Shura Council of Benghazi , which also includes Ansar al-Sharia , shot down a MiG-23 fighter aircraft of the Libyan Air Force near Ganfouda (Quanfouda) west of Benghazi with an anti-aircraft missile. The pilot was able to save himself with the ejector seat.
  • Frankfurt am Main / Germany : After 43 years of party membership, Erika Steinbach , a member of the Bundestag, has announced that she is leaving the CDU and the CDU / CSU parliamentary group . One of the reasons she gives is the German refugee policy, which she sees as a failure . She remains represented in the Bundestag as a non-party member.
  • Gangasagar / India : At least six people die in a mass panic at the Makar Sankranti festival in West Bengal .
  • Natal / Brazil : At least 30 people were killed in fights between members of the warring gangs Comando de la Capital and the Sindicato del Crimen in the overcrowded state penitentiary in Alcaçuz, with over 1000 inmates. The police have taken control again after a 14-hour clash.
  • Paris / France : Start of a Middle East peace conference on the two-state solution with representatives from more than 70 states and international organizations. Representatives of Israel and Palestinians are not at the negotiating table. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sees it as a manipulated conference with the aim of adopting anti-Israeli positions.
