Former Nibelungen barracks

The Nibelungenkaserne was a barracks of the Bundeswehr in the southern urban area ( Galgenberg district ) of Regensburg . It was the last of the four Bundeswehr barracks in Regensburg and with an area of 33 hectares (other figures 35 and 40 hectares) it was also the largest. The last active units were withdrawn in 2007 and the service center closed in 2010. On April 26, 2011 the purchase contract was signed and the barracks became the property of the city of Regensburg.

History and use

"Fort Skelly" (1950)

The barracks were built between 1939 and 1941 for the flak cartillery according to a design by the Luftwaffe building management team with the assistance of Ignaz Hirner . On March 13, 1945, it was badly damaged in a US air raid and a little later, on April 27, it was captured by the 3rd US Army . After the war it was used as "Fort Skelly" by the US Army's 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment until 1964 . In September 1965, the Army Air Defense Force of the Bundeswehr moved into the building, which was renamed the Nibelungen barracks .

Union emblem of the 4th Panzer Grenadier Division

Until its closure, it was mainly home to two units of the 4th Panzer Grenadier Division, the 4th anti-aircraft regiment and the 41st field artillery battalion . Almost 2,000 soldiers were stationed there during the Cold War . For major equipment included the 36 Flakpanzer Gepard , which has a concrete exit to the east of the barracks to exercises on the southern Regensburg training area Oberhinkofen were laid. Also M107 - and M110 -Artilleriegeschütze and M109 howitzers were stationed there; the latter two guns would have been able to fire US artillery shells with nuclear warheads within the framework of nuclear participation .

With the dissolution of the 4th Panzer Grenadier Division, the 4th Telecommunications Battalion and the Special Operations Division (DSO) moved into the area.

Use after closing

Former Nibelungen barracks

According to the land use plan, around a third of the area is to be used commercially as the TechCampus Regensburg. Due to the close proximity to the university campus with the University of Regensburg and the OTH Regensburg , science and business are to be developed. The concept envisages creating space for, for example, non-university research and young high-tech companies. The first buildings in the TechCampus should be ready for occupancy in 2015.

In addition, around 800 apartments and around 300 student apartments are to be built on the former site of the Nibelungen barracks.
