Large devices are devices that can no longer be transported by one person alone without their own drive.

In military parlance, this is understood to mean in particular vehicles , tanks , artillery , aircraft and ships .

In the field of construction , large devices are understood to mean all devices that are not small devices , such as vehicles ( trucks ), wheel loaders , cranes , excavators and other earthworks equipment .

In the experimental natural sciences, this is understood to mean research infrastructures for large-scale research , the establishment and expansion of which represent an essential part of the research budget of the research institution concerned , which are correspondingly large and extensive, designed and planned by many scientists in many years of research and development work and then by shared by many research groups. The major scientific equipment used in science in Germany includes, for example, the research infrastructures operated by the Helmholtz Association , especially for university users , such as the particle accelerators of the GSI in Darmstadt and DESY in Hamburg , or the research ship Polarstern , but also the research neutron source Heinz Maier -Leibnitz in Garching , the experimental fusion reactors in Garching and Greifswald and the like.
