Major order for the US armed forces

The United States Armed Forces planned to replace the current end-of-life service pistol Beretta 92FS with a new Modular Handgun System (MHS) and to purchase around 500,000 new pistols for this purpose. In February 2016, twelve proposals were submitted by the industry. On July 1, 2016, SIG Sauer was one of three remaining bidders in the tendering process. SIG Sauer received the order on January 19, 2017.

SIG Sauer will start production for the US armed forces with its SIG Sauer P320 model at its Rockingham County plant in New Hampshire for the next ten years . In total, the order includes around 280,000 units for the US Army alone and a further 212,000 units for the other branches of the armed forces worth around 580.2 million US dollars including ammunition and accessories.

technology

The basic feature of the system family is the modular structure. With the exception of the larger .45-ACP cartridge, the weapon can be converted to another ammunition using conversion kits. This is also possible without the use of tools. Depending on the compactness and ammunition, many combinations are possible, each with a different magazine capacity, barrel length and weight. Additional components such as B. a laser light module can be attached to a Picatinny rail standardized according to STANAG below the muzzle.

The lever for releasing the bolt catch can be operated on both sides, as can the magazine catch . The weapon does not have a hammer, but an internal hammer. There is no external safety lever. Instead, an internal fuse prevents shots from being fired without pulling the trigger.
