Lists on the subject |
The SIG P220 pistol is a self-loading pistol from SIG Sauer GmbH & Co. KG in Eckernförde . It was designed and (partially) constructed by Walter Ludwig in the 1960s and early 1970s at SIG in Neuhausen (Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland) on behalf of the Swiss Army.
Technology and use
The SIG P220 is a recoil gun with a modified Browning system . The barrel locks to the chamber block in the slide's case ejection window . After the shot, the slide and barrel run back together a few millimeters, then the cartridge chamber is pulled down by the control link and thereby unlocked by the slide, which covers the rest of the way through its inertia. The recoil spring moves the slide forward again, inserting a new cartridge from the magazine into the chamber and cocking the trigger. The barrel is lifted out of the control link and locked again in the case ejection window. The weapon has a cocking trigger, pressure point trigger and an automatic firing pin safety.
There are two series of the SIG 220. The first series has a fine ribbing on the slide and is rounded off when running. The second series has a coarse corrugation and is "angular" when running.
Users
The Swiss Army has been using the weapon as a service pistol in caliber 9 × 19 mm under the designations Pist 75 and Pistole 75 since 1975, when it replaced the SIG P210 . It is also used by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (model variant P220 Rail) and the military police of the Canadian armed forces (model variant P225). The Pontifical Swiss Guard is equipped with the weapon.
