Lists on the subject |
The SIG Sauer P226 is a self-loading pistol from the German manufacturer SIG Sauer . It is based on the SIG P220, which has been in production since 1975, and has been modified so that it has a higher ammunition capacity. This should qualify them for international tenders for military short weapons.
background
It was mainly about the tender for the new service pistol of the US armed forces , which wanted to replace the old Colt M1911 in 1984 . Among the competitors were well-known companies such as Smith & Wesson , Colt , Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre and Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta ; after a long comparison process, however, only the SIG Sauer P226 and the Italian Beretta 92 remained in the race. Technically on par, the USA decided to purchase the Beretta due to the lower overall system price. Even if the extremely lucrative American military market was lost as a result, many other armed forces and police formations opted for the SIG-Sauer. The most important of these were:
- the United States Secret Service
- the British Army and the Special Air Service
- the Naval Criminal Investigative Service
- the Israel Defense Forces
- the Dutch Army
- the United States Navy SEALs
- various Swiss police corps
- the Berlin police ( SEK / MEK / PSK in parts)
- the Federal Criminal Police Office (Germany)
technology
The P226 differs from the original model in terms of its magazine capacity. The two-row magazine now holds 15 rounds, but the grip has been made a little wider. The locking takes place, as there, by means of a swivel run that engages in the ejector window. According to the tendering criteria of the US Army, the magazine catch is available on both sides. For universal use in both civil and military environments, several variants are available with regard to the ammunition used and the trigger mechanism:
- Double Action (DA / SA): classic cocked trigger, the trigger weight when the rifle is not cocked is 53.9 N (5.5 kp ), otherwise 19.61 N (2.0 kp) (the cock remains cocked after the first shot, so off the second shot single action, the cock can also be cocked before the first shot.)
- Double Action Only (DAO): pure clamping trigger, always 53.9 N (5.5 kp)
- Double Action Kellermann (DAK): always pre-cocked weapon with a constant 34.3 N (3.5 kp) trigger weight, similar to the Glock's safe-action system
