Lists on the subject

.357 SIG is one of SIGARMS in cooperation with Federal Cartridge 1994 developed centerfire ammunition . The .357 SIG uses a modified .40 S&W case, with the case neck diameter reduced towards the case mouth so that .357 bullets can be used. It is therefore a cartridge with a bottle neck sleeve , which has similar properties to a rifle cartridge. SIG avoided advertising its new cartridge as 9 × 22 mm to avoid prior public rejection. Instead, they named it .357 to symbolize the reason for the new cartridge: it was supposed to have the same properties as the 125-grain .357 magnum cartridge, but to be used in a semi-automatic weapon.

The relatively high muzzle velocity results in a particularly favorable ballistic trajectory, which increases the effective range of a weapon in .357 SIG caliber. The E 0 value can be above 1050 J with the appropriate ammunition, which is the exception for pistols. This ensures a particularly high penetration power, which is why the .357 SIG is also well suited for use against protected targets.

Conversions

Dimensions of the .357 SIG

Many .40 S&W caliber pistols can be converted to .357 SIG caliber pistols by replacing the barrel. Pistols with relatively weak recoil springs also require replacing these. Magazines are compatible with each other. .357-SIG conversion kits have also increased the popularity of this cartridge, but it should be noted here that the .357 can generate up to 345 bar higher pressure than the .40 S&W, which has a negative effect on the .40-S&W Guns can affect.

use

The SIG Sauer P229 with caliber .357 SIG is the current standard weapon of the United States Secret Service , the Virginia State Police, the US Marshals, the Texas Rangers and various other authorities in the USA. In many cases, it replaced .40 S&W or 9mm Parabellum weapons . In 1995, the Texas Department of Public Safety became the first government agency to introduce the .357 SIG.

The cartridge is also enjoying increasing popularity among hunters as a weapon for the catch shot, as it can be fired from handy semi-automatic weapons and thus offers advantages over heavy revolvers in hunting.
