The final round of the 23rd men's soccer World Cup (officially 2026 FIFA World Cup , official German spelling FIFA Soccer World Cup 2026 ) is to take place in June and July 2026 in Canada , Mexico and the USA . The organizing countries were chosen on June 13, 2018 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow .

Application process and award

During its meeting in Bahrain on May 11, 2017, the FIFA Congress stipulated that interest in the host had to be deposited by August 11, 2017. An early award to the only application so far (Canada, Mexico and USA) was rejected. By the deadline, Morocco also declared its interest in hosting the World Cup. The complete application documents had to be submitted by March 2018. These have been checked by FIFA. On the basis of the resulting audit report, the FIFA Council decided to submit both applications to the FIFA Congress for a decision, which was to vote on the venue for the first time instead of the now-defunct FIFA Executive Committee . Each of the 207 associations had one vote in this vote.

According to current FIFA regulations, members of the Asian and European associations were not allowed to apply because the 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar and the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the FIFA confederations are to take turns as hosts. For the first time, the human rights situation in the applicant countries played a role in the award .

As host of the 2026 World Cup the day before the opening match of were by FIFA on 13 June 2018, World Cup 2018 , Canada in addition to Mexico and the United States announced ( "United in 2026"). They prevailed in the election with 134 to 65 votes, with one abstention, against Morocco .

Reform of game modes

FIFA President Gianni Infantino spoke out in favor of an increase to 48 participating nations and thus successfully solicited votes from smaller non-European nations for his re-election on February 26, 2016. The European football associations are against this increase, which would mainly benefit non-European associations.

On January 10, 2017, FIFA decided that 48 countries would participate in 16 groups of three teams each. The duration of the preliminary round remains the same, as there are twice as many groups, but only half as many games per group (three instead of six), there is a round of sixteen in the knockout system , which doubles the number of the games in the knockout round. However, the number of games up to the final remains the same at seven. The total number of all games in the World Cup increases from 64 to 80.
