Football World Cup 1942

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fourth soccer world championship was originally planned for 1942, but was finally postponed to 1950 because of the outbreak of World War II (1939–1945).

Planning for 1942

The German Football Association had officially applied to host the 1942 World Cup at the 23rd FIFA Congress on August 13, 1936 in Berlin . A short time later, the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol also submitted an official application for the 1942 World Cup.

After two World Championships in Europe, South American delegates wanted to see another World Cup held in South America. Sports-political reasons were given against hosting in Germany, as Germany wanted to exclude professional footballers from the tournament. However, FIFA basically insisted that professionals could also take part in World Cups. In addition, FIFA also criticized the policies of the National Socialists in general.

Another tournament in Europe was supported by the fact that if it were to be held in Brazil, it was feared that some well-known European national teams would stay away from the tournament because their associations would shy away from the high expense of a trip to South America, as they did at the World Cup in Uruguay in 1930 happen.

The decision on the venue for the 1942 World Cup was to be made at the FIFA Congress that met in Paris in 1938 during the World Cup . Since no agreement could be reached, FIFA postponed the decision to its next congress in 1940.

In June 1939, a third applicant for the 1942 World Cup came with the Argentine Football Association . FIFA's hope that another European country besides Germany could apply for the 1942 World Cup was not fulfilled. FIFA President Jules Rimet traveled to South America in the late summer of 1939 to sound out the situation there. During his stay in Rio de Janeiro , on September 1, 1939, the German invasion of Poland broke out and the Second World War broke out in Europe. Planning for the 1942 World Cup was discontinued before Congress could be convened and a host country could be selected.

The press reports that the tournament was awarded to Germany on December 20, 1939 are controversial. It is presumed that it was a deliberate false report by the press controlled by the National Socialist government . The world association immediately denied the tournament being awarded.

Planning after the war

Because of the war, the next FIFA Congress did not take place in Luxembourg until July 1, 1946 ; 34 associations were represented. There it was decided that the next World Cup should take place in 1949. With Brazil, there was only one applicant for the organization, which was unanimously accepted. In addition, Switzerland , one of the few countries in Europe largely spared from the war, was given an option for the 5th World Cup in 1953. However, for organizational reasons, the 4th World Cup was postponed by one year to 1950. The date of the World Cup in Switzerland was automatically postponed from 1953 to 1954 due to the mandatory four-year interval. The option was confirmed by the Confederates and the 5th World Cup took place in Switzerland in 1954 .
