Alfred Gudelius (born August 21, 1906 in Munster ; † March 25, 1944 near Tarnopol , Ukraine ) was a German army officer in the infantry .

Life

Gudelius joined the Higher Police School of the State Police in Münster-Aaseestadt on October 25, 1925 (today State Office for Training, Further Education and Personnel Matters ).

From 1936 he was a captain and company commander in Infantry Regiment 39 in Düsseldorf . As a company commander in the infantry regiment "Danzig 1", formerly the State Police Regiment 1, in the Eberhardt Brigade, later the 60th Infantry Division , he took part in the attack on Poland and in 1939 was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. From late autumn 1939 he served as a company commander in Rifle Regiment 14 of the 5th Panzer Division in Opole . His use in the western campaign in 1940 was honored with the award of the Iron Cross 1st class. He also took part in the Balkan campaign . From autumn 1941 he led the war against the Soviet Union in Army Group Center as major and commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 14th Rifle Regiment in the 5th Panzer Division.

For his work in the attack on Moscow he was awarded the German Cross in Gold on November 13, 1941 as the first member of the 5th Panzer Division . On February 10, 1942 he received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross as the third officer of the 5th Panzer Division for his missions with the combat group "Gudelius" in the defensive battles around Vyazma .

After being wounded in March 1942 and subsequently employed by the Chief of Army Armaments in the Army High Command (OKH), he returned to the Eastern Front in March 1944. This time he was in the Army Group South as commander of the armored infantry -Regiments 8, also Grenadiers "Gudelius" in the 8th Panzer Division used. Lieutenant Colonel Gudelius fell there in a relief attack on the " Festes Platz " Tarnopol . With retroactive effect from March 1, 1944, he was promoted to colonel .

Alfred Gudelius was married to Elisabeth Emilie Bertha Schutte (1915–2011) from 1935. His son Jost Gudelius (* 1942) later became an officer in the Bundeswehr .
