The Estadio Akron (previously Estadio Omnilife and Estadio Chivas ) is a football stadium in Zapopan , a suburb northwest of Guadalajara , in the Mexican state of Jalisco . Right from the start, it was initially planned to name the stadium after the local soccer club Chivas Guadalajara , which has played its home games here ever since. One month before the official opening, however, it was announced that the venue would be given the name of the Spanish telecommunications company Movistar, which is intended as a sponsor . A week before the opening, Omnilife was named as the new name ; after the company of the stadium owner Jorge Vergara , who is also president of the Chivas Guadalajara football club. This name was actually given and lasted until the end of February 2016. In December 2017, the change of the sponsorship name to Estadio Akron was agreed. The contract from the season 2018 with the manufacturer of automobile - lubricants has a term of ten years.

One day later, the opening match between CD Guadalajara and Manchester United took place, which the hosts won 3-2 (2-1). Chicharito , who played for Chivas in the 2009/10 season and moved to Manchester United for the 2010/11 season, played the first half in ranks of his old employer and the second half in ranks of his new employer. He was also the first goalscorer in the new stadium when he scored the opening goal for Guadalajara in the 8th minute. The other goals were scored by Chris Smalling in the 10th minute to 1: 1, Adolfo Bautista in the 38th minute to 2: 1, Héctor Reynoso after just under an hour to 3: 1 and Nani in the 79th minute to 3: 2 Final score.

The first competitive game at the Estadio Omnilife took place on August 11, 2010 as part of the first leg of the 2010 Copa Libertadores between Chivas Guadalajara and Inter Porto Alegre . Here the favored Brazilians were far superior to the underdogs from Mexico and deservedly won 2: 1 (0: 1). In the 45th minute, Adolfo Bautista had surprisingly brought the home team 1-0 up before Victor de Paula Giuliano (73rd min.) And Fabian Guedes Bolívar (77th) were able to secure the victory of the favorites. Incidentally, all goals in this game were scored with a header.

The stadium, which can hold around 45,500 spectators, is primarily intended to be used for the CD Guadalajara football matches. Although it was already associated with three official names before its opening, its nickname El volcán ( German  The Volcano ) has been preserved to this day, because the arena, its parking lots and the entire infrastructure, are invisible to the outside world Crater “hidden”. Only its roof rises out of the crater like a cloud and is visible to outsiders. The sports facility fits harmoniously into the surrounding landscape, which consists of natural vegetation and is located away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

The unconventional construction, which was planned by the renowned French architecture firm Studio Massaud-Pouzet and built by the international construction company HOK Sport + Venue + Event , was created with the intention of creating something unique that clearly stands out from most stadiums in the world .
