Aydın Sefa Akay

Aydin Sefa Akay (born August 3, 1950 in Ankara ) is a Turkish diplomat and judge. He served as a judge at the International Criminal Court for Rwanda from 2003 to 2012 .

Life and work

Akay graduated from Ankara University with a bachelor's degree in 1972 and continued his studies in human rights with a master's and doctorate at Hacettepe University .

Legal activities followed for several years (1973 to 1987). From 1987 he worked as a legal advisor for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 2003 he was a member of a five-person UN panel charged with examining the judgment against the Rwandan planning minister Augustin Ngirabatware .

In September 2016, he was arrested because an app was found on his cell phone that was also used by those involved in the coup for communication . His immunity was not recognized as the charges were unrelated to his diplomatic activities and he was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. Akay was accused of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order, manslaughter and membership in the alleged Fethullah terrorist organization ( FETÖ ) . He was banned from leaving the country and released from prison. The case will be heard before the Court of Cassation .

Akay is a staunch Republican and a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in Turkey .

He also works for the Council of Europe's Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) .
