Asyut ( Arabic محافظة أسيوط Muhāfazat Asyūt , DMG Muḥāfaẓat Asyūṭ ) is a governorate in Egypt with 4,383,289 inhabitants and is located in Middle Egypt .

It is bordered to the north by the governorate of al-Minya , to the east by the governorate of the Red Sea , to the south by the governorate of Sauhaj and to the west by the governorate of al-Wadi al-jadid . The eastern part of the governorate extends into the Arabian desert . The administrative center is Asyut .
