al-Fayyum ( Arabic محافظة الفيوم Muhāfazat al-Fayyūm , DMG Muḥāfaẓat al-Fayyūm , Egyptian-Arabic Muḥāfẓet El Fayyūm ), also Faijum , is a governorate in Egypt with 2,979,029 inhabitants and is located in Central Egypt , on the eastern edge of the Libyan Desert , 90 km southwest of Cairo .
It is bordered by the al-Jiza Governorate to the west and north and the Bani Suwaif governorate to the east and south . The administrative center is Madinat al-Fayyum .
For government includes the Wadi Al-Hitan , since 2005 site of the UNESCO - World Heritage Site .
