The Sauhadsch Governorate ( Arabic محافظة سوهاج Muhāfazat Sauhādsch , DMG Muḥāfaẓat Sawhāǧ , Egyptian-Arabic Muḥāfẓet Sōhāg or Sōhādsch ) is a governorate in Egypt with 4,967,409 inhabitants and is located in Middle Egypt .

Sauhaj is on both sides of the Nile ; it borders on the Asyut Governorate to the north, the al-Bahr al-ahmar Governorate to the east, the Qina Governorate to the south and the al-Wadi al-Jadid Governorate to the west . The eastern part of the governorate extends into the Arabian desert . The administrative center has been Suhag since 1960 , before that it was the city of Girga and the name at that time was Girga Gouvernement .
