Al-Qahira ( Arabic محافظة القاهرة Muhāfazat al-Qāhira , DMG Muḥāfaẓat al-Qāhira , Egyptian-Arabic Muḥāfẓet El Qahira ), also Cairo , is a governorate in Egypt with 9,539,673 inhabitants.
It is bordered to the north by the governorates of al-Qalyubiyya and al-Sharqiyya , to the east by the governorates of al-Isma asiliyya and as-Suwais, and to the south and west by the governorate of al-Jiza . The governorate includes Cairo's city center and Cairo's old town on the east bank of the Nile; while the districts west of the Nile belong to the al-Jiza governorate. The eastern part of the governorate extends into the Arabian desert . The administrative center is Cairo .
