Aswan or Aswan ( Arabic محافظة أسوان Muhāfazat Aswān , DMG Muḥāfaẓat Aswān ) is a governorate in Egypt with 1,473,975 inhabitants.
It is located in the south of the country, in Upper Egypt , on both sides of the Nile . The capital is the city of the same name, Aswan .
It borders the Qina Governorate to the north, the al-Bahr al-ahmar governorate to the east , Sudan to the south and the al-Wadi al-Jadid governorate to the west . Lake Nasser belongs to this governorate . The eastern part of the governorate extends into the Arabian desert .
