Al-Wadi al-Jadid ( Arabic محافظة الوادي الجديد Muhāfazat al-Wādī al-dschadīd , DMG Muḥāfaẓat al-Wādī al-ǧadīd , Egyptian-Arabic : el-Wādī el-gedīd , German  "New Valley" ) is a governorate in Egypt with 241,247 inhabitants and is located in the southern part of the Libyan desert . With 376,505 km², the governorate is by far the largest governorate in Egypt. The governorate was formed in 1958 under the then President Gamal Abdel Nasser , previously it was part of the administrative area of ​​as-Sahra 'al-Dschanubiyya ( German  "southern desert" )until 1958. In 1968 the Bahariyya Basin was added to the al-Jiza Governorate . The administrative center has been al-Kharga since 1958.

Al-Wadi al-Jadid borders in the north on the governorates of Matruh , al-Jiza and al-Minya , in the east on the governorates Asyut , Sauhaj , Qina , al-Uqsur and Aswan , in the south on Sudan and in the west on Libya . The landscape is shaped by the Libyan desert, by smaller ranges of hills and mountains and by three large depressions:

In the south, the international border with Sudan is formed by the 22nd parallel . In the west, the border with Libya is marked by the 25th degree of longitude . The internal border to the governorates of Matruh, al-Jiza and al-Minya in the north runs along the latitude 27 ° 54 '.

administration

The al-Wadi al-Jadid governorate is divided into four districts ( marakiz , singular markaz ), the inhabited areas of which correspond to the aforementioned depressions, with Baris south of Kharga being separate. Dachla is by far the largest district in terms of area, to which the large uninhabited desert areas in southwest Egypt are added, including Gilf el-Kebir .

241,247 people live in al-Wadi al-Jadid, making the governorate the most sparsely populated in Egypt. Only the oases in the depressions are inhabited.

economy

Economically, the governorate is characterized by agriculture and mining, the most important branch of industry is phosphate mining, for example in the phosphate mines of Abu Tartur 50 km west of al-Charga. Dates, citrus fruits, olives, rice and cereals are mainly grown on the cultivated soils of the oases. In terms of infrastructure, the populated areas are provided by a 1500 km long ring road, completed in 1980, which starts from Luxor and connects 5 Egyptian depressions ( Luxor - Charga - Dachla - Farafra - Bahariyya ( al-Jiza governorate ) - Madinat al-Fayyum ( al-Fayyum governorate ) - Cairo ) and ends in Cairo. The current major agricultural development projects, the New Valley Project and the Toshka Project are of economic importance .
