John Jahr (born December 27, 1933 in Hamburg ; † August 14, 2006 there ) was a German publisher .

Life

Family grave year

John Jahr junior was the eldest son of publisher John Jahr senior . Jahr first learned the profession of typesetter and printer from 1948 to 1951 . After an internship at Feldmühle AG and at Druckhaus Tempelhof in Berlin, he worked as an assistant in the editor-in-chief of the Daily Mirror in London in 1953/1954 and at Time and Life in New York City in 1955/1956 .

In 1956 he became an assistant in the publishing house of John Jahr, 1957 publishing director of the magazine Brigitte . In 1962 he also took over the management of the business magazine Capital . In 1964 he became managing director of the “Constanze Verlag”, which belongs to the year.

In 1965 he became one of the founding managing directors of the publishing house Gruner + Jahr and was a member of the board from 1971 to 2000. After leaving the G + J Management Board, his sister Angelika Jahr-Stilcken was appointed to the Management Board as his successor. Until his death, he and his siblings Alexander, Michael and Angelika held a 25.1 percent stake in G + J through the Jahr Holding. In addition, Jahr was a managing partner of the Spielbank Hamburg , the Wiesbaden casino and the Frankfurt casino .

John year jr. was married to Heike Jahr, the couple had three children. He died of cardiovascular failure on August 14, 2006 after hip surgery. A few weeks earlier, his brother, the lawyer and publisher Alexander, died unexpectedly . The graves of the brothers are located in a family grave at the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg.

After Jahr's death, his son John Jahr Jr. took over . jr. the seat of the father in the year holding company . John year jr.jr. had already joined several of the family's holdings as managing director or partner during his father's lifetime. After the death of his father, he and his two sisters held the shares of the family branch in the G + J Holdings through the company J. Jahr GmbH & Co. KG, which are only passed on to the biological descendants of the progenitor John Jahr senior . The total assets of the descendants of John Jahr senior were estimated at around 2.5 billion euros in 2011.
