Gerard Adriaan "Ard" van der Steur (born October 7, 1969 in Haarlem , province of North Holland ) is a Dutch lawyer and politician of the People's Party for Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD). Between 2010 and 2015 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General and from March 20, 2015 to January 26, 2017, Minister for Security and Justice in the second cabinet of Prime Minister Mark Rutte .

Life

After primary school, Van der Steur attended the Sancta Maria high school in Haarlem between 1982 and 1988 and then began studying law in the Netherlands in 1988 with a focus on civil law at the University of Leiden , which he graduated in 1995. During his studies between 1992 and 1995 he worked for the lawyers' association Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten . After completing his studies, he took up a position as a lawyer in 1995 at the law firm NautaDutilh NV in Rotterdam , a law association with several representations and 400 lawyers, and worked there until 2006. After further training in the summer of 2005 at the University of Perugia (Università per Stranieri di Perugia) , he last became a partner in the firm in 2005.

In addition, van der Steur, who has been a member of the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD) since 1988, began his political career in local politics and was a member of the local council of Warmond between March 14, 2002 and January 1, 2006 or after its merger with the municipalities of Sassenheim and Voorhout from January 1st, 2006 to March 27th, 2014 member of the municipality council of Teylingen . During this time he was also chairman of the VVD parliamentary group in the local council between 2002 and 2010 .

In addition to his work as a lawyer, he was a part-time lecturer for civil law at the University of Leiden between 2006 and 2010 and also part- time legal advisor for the DA drugstore chain from 2007 to 2010 . He has also been the owner of a company for in-house seminars for lawyers and other legal service providers since 2006 and the owner of the Van der Steur Advocatuur law firm since 2009 .

As a candidate of the VVD, he was elected to the Second Chamber of the States General on June 17, 2010 and was a member of it until March 20, 2015.

On September 20, 2015 van der Steur was appointed by Prime Minister Mark Rutte as Minister for Security and Justice (Minister van Veiligheid en Justitie) in his second cabinet. On the evening of January 26, 2017, van der Steur resigned as Minister.
