  • Gozo / Malta : The famous stone gate Azure Window , one of the main attractions of the island, collapses under strong winds.
  • Kabul / Afghanistan : Four armed fighters in doctor's coats and a suicide bomber attack the Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan military hospital in the Wasir Akbar Khan district in the heavily secured city center. The assassin blows himself up at the security gate and the gunmen kill at least 49 people in the building. The terrorist organization Islamic State is committed to the act.
  • Karlsruhe / Germany : The Federal Constitutional Court ruled that foreign government politicians in official positions do not have the right to speak in Germany, but the Federal Government can grant them this right . A ban on speaking is not legally enforceable, even if citizens are concerned about political advertising by, for example, Turkish politicians. A constitutional complaint against the appearance of Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım ( AKP ) on February 18 in Oberhausen for propaganda for a form of government that is anti- democratic under the Basic Law is rejected as inadmissible (Ref .: 2 BvR 483/17).
  • San José Pinula / Guatemala : At least 37 people die in a fire in the Centro público de rehabilitación Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asunción, a home for children and young people. Rioting youths set mattresses on fire after they were locked in their rooms and then had no chance to escape the fire.
  • Tikrit / Iraq : Two suicide bombers blow themselves up on a wedding party in Hajjaj around 30 km north of Tikrit, killing 26 people and injuring another 67.

  • Homs / Syria : After an agreement in the civil war between the Syrian government and opposition representatives, up to 500 rebels and their families leave the western Al-Waer district, which has been besieged since 2013, in buses provided , under the observation of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and Russian soldiers . Another 12,000 people, including around 2,500 rebels, are expected to follow in the next few weeks.
  • Saint-Georges / French Guiana : The 378-meter-long bridge over the Oyapock , completed in 2011, will be opened to traffic. It connects the border community of Saint-Georges in the EU and NATO territory of French Guiana with the Brazilian border town of Oiapoque .

  • Al-Arish / Egypt : Another Islamist attack kills four Egyptian soldiers and several booby traps destroy the building of a facility at Azhar University . It was not until March 23 that at least 10 soldiers and 15 terrorists were killed in firefights in North Sinai between the Egyptian armed forces and supporters of the Islamic State (IS).
  • Kananga / DR Congo : Kamwina-Nsapu militiamen attack a police convoy in the village of Kasanisha in the province of Kasaï-Central and kill at least 42 police officers. Most of the victims were beheaded, the rest were shot. The rebels also captured weapons and ammunition.

  • Marl / Germany : Jan Böhmermann is awarded the Grimme Prize in the entertainment category for an episode of the program Neo Magazin Royale .
  • Mocoa / Colombia : Torrential rains trigger a mudslide that causes great destruction in the Mocoa community. Almost half of the city was destroyed; at least 283 people are killed and more than 400 are missing.
  • South Atlantic : The South Korean iron ore freighter " Stellar Daisy " capsizes after a water inrush and, according to experts, sank 2500 km off the Uruguayan coast. Two of the 24 seafarers have so far been rescued by a raft.
