San José Pinula is a small town in Guatemala with around 11,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Department of Guatemala . The place is 22 kilometers southeast of Guatemala City at 1,752 m above sea level on the national road 18, which leads from the capital to Jalapa .

The 220 km² municipality extends in the southeastern mountainous region of the department of Guatemala. It has a total of around 55,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom live in rural settlements and villages, including Santa Inés Pinula, Ciénega Grande, El Platanar, Las Anonas, El Pino, San Luis, Santa Rita, Contreras, Concepción Pinula, El Sombrerito, La Primavera, El Zapote, El Colorado (1/2), Joya de los Cedros, El Socorro / San Shin, El Carmen, Río Frío, Cruz Alta and Las Nubes.

Adjacent municipalities are Palencia in the north, Guatemala City in the northwest, Santa Catarina Pinula in the west and Fraijanes in the southwest. In the east, San José del Golfo borders on Mataquescuintla in the neighboring department El Progreso , in the south on Santa Rosa de Lima ( Department Santa Rosa ).

The place San José Pinula emerged from a Jesuit estate during colonial times . Until 1886 it belonged as a rural community to the municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula.

On March 8, 2017, at least 41 girls were killed in a fire in a state youth home called '' Virgen de la Asunción ''. They protested the housing conditions, overcrowding and sexual abuse by the staff, including setting fire to mattresses. The inmates were homeless or had previously served in juvenile detention. In total there were over 500 young people in the complex. Government workers were charged and charged, but there were delays in prosecuting them.
