San Juan Sacatepéquez is a city of around 100,000 in Guatemala . It is located 32 km northwest of Guatemala City at an altitude of around 1,800 m. San Juan Sacatepéquez is the administrative seat of the eponymous, 242 km² municipality in the northwest of the department of Guatemala . The total of around 200,000 inhabitants of the municipality come mainly from the Maya and speak Spanish as well as Cakchiquel . About half of them live in numerous rural settlements and villages, including Cerro Alto, Comunidad de Ruiz, Cruz Blanca, Estancia Grande, Las Trojes, Loma Alta, Los Guates, Montúfar, Pachalí, Pirires, Sajcavilla, Sacsuy and Suacité.

Adjacent Municipios are San Raimundo in the east and San Pedro Sacatepéquez in the south. Santo Domingo Xenacoj and Sumpango in the neighboring Department of Sacatepéquez follow in the southwest, El Tejar , Chimaltenango and San Martín Jilotepeque in Chimaltenango in the west, and Granado (Baja Verapaz) in the north .

Economy and Transport

San Juan Sacatepéquez is known for its well-developed furniture industry, numerous handicrafts and horticultural companies that also export their products abroad. There are also some quarries. Tourism is not very pronounced, the only attractions are the ruins of Mixco Viejo a little further north as well as the beautiful colonial buildings in the old town and Plaza Cataluña, which were rebuilt after the severe earthquake of 1976.

The traditional military academy of the armed forces of Guatemala , the Escuela Politécnica, is located in San Juan Sacatepéquez . It was previously based on Avenida La Reforma in downtown Guatemala City. The Ministry of Defense is housed there today .

The Calzada San Juan Sacatepéquez is an important traffic axis in the capital. It joins the old national road 5, which leads via San Juan Sacatepéquez, Montúfar, Granados , El Chol , Rabinal and Salamá to Cobán and further north. The Dominican Bartolomé de Las Casas was particularly active on this axis in the 16th century .
