Granados is a small town in the south of the Baja Verapaz department in Guatemala . Granados is the administrative seat of the large municipality of the same name ( Municipio ), which extends over 248 km² and has about 13,000 inhabitants. The municipality named after the former president Miguel García Granados Zavala is divided into 13 rural communities with a total of 41 small towns or settlements.
location
Granados is located 78 km north of Guatemala City and 64 km southwest of Salamá at the foot of the Sierra de Chuacús at an altitude of 954 m. Granados can be reached via National Road 5, the old highway from Guatemala City to Salamá, Cobán and El Peten . The road is very winding and only partly asphalted. The municipality is located in a mountainous area that slopes south to the valley of the Río Motagua , which also forms the border between the departments of Baja Verapaz and Guatemala . In the west the departments Chimaltenango and Quiché adjoin , in the north Granados borders on the Municipios Cubulco and Rabinal , in the east on El Chol .
economy
Granados lives mainly from agriculture and the mining of minerals . The place is located in a very remote and undeveloped area, which is why trade and tourism are developing very slowly. Granados is connected to the electricity and water supply, has primary and secondary schools and a small infirmary .
From 10 to 15 January will find in honor of the patron saint Cristo Negro de Granados larger parties instead, which also attract tourists.
history
The Granados area was settled by Spaniards who migrated from the east along the Río Motagua . For this reason, the community has almost no indigenous inhabitants. The administrative seat of the municipality was in Saltán until 1893, which is now a rural municipality ( Aldea ) of the municipality of Granados. The place Granados was called Finca El Rodeo until 1893 and was then named after the President Granados , who had visited the finca at the time. In 1935 the neighboring Santa Cruz El Chol came to the Municipio Granados for one year as part of an administrative reform.
