San Miguel Chicaj is a large municipality in the Baja Verapaz department in Guatemala . Around 23,000 people live in the 300 km² municipal area, the majority in San Miguel, the rest in eight other localities and 21 hamlets.

location

San Miguel is located in the heart of the Baja Verapaz department between Salamá and Rabinal at an altitude of about 940 meters on the northern foothills of the Sierra de Chuacús. From Guatemala City it is via the Atlantic trunk road CA 9, the CA 14 branching off at El Rancho to Cobán and via Salamá 159 km to San Miguel Chicaj. The alternative connection via San Juan Sacatepéquez , El Chol and Rabinal is 146 km long, but the journey time is considerably longer due to the road conditions and the numerous bends.

San Miguel lives mainly from agriculture and handicrafts.

history

San Miguel Chicaj was founded as "Rancho San Miguelito" and raised to a municipality in 1803 (1877) . The Maya word "Chicaj" means "in heaven". As in Rabinal, the people of San Miguel speak the Mayan language Achí .
