Purulhá is a municipality in the Baja Verapaz department in Guatemala . About 37,000 people live in the 248 km² large municipal area, most of them in Purulhá, the rest in five other localities and 28 hamlets.

location

Purulhá is located in the north of the Baja Verapaz department on the highway from Guatemala City to Cobán in Alta Verapaz at an altitude of about 1,570 m in a cloud forest area . The nature reserve Biotopo Mario Dary Rivera is very close by .

The municipality borders on Salamá to the south and the Alta Verapaz department to the north .

economy

Purulhá has a well developed agriculture, the main products are coffee , cardamom , corn , beans and sugar cane . Livestock breeding also plays an important role. The small craft businesses produce textiles and wickerwork. Purulhá benefits from through traffic to Cobán and from visitors to the nearby nature reserve.

history

The origins of Purulhá are unclear. Settlers probably founded the place around 1809. It was officially mentioned for the first time under the name San Antonio Purulhá in 1836, later the name of the patron was dropped. Purulhá means "boiling water" in the Mayan language .
