San Pedro Ayampuc is a small town in Guatemala with around 30,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Department of Guatemala . The city is about 25 kilometers north of Guatemala City .
The 113 km² municipality extends in the northern mountains of the department of Guatemala at altitudes between 1,100 and 1,600 meters. It has a total of around 50,000 inhabitants, most of whom are cakchiquel . A large part of the people live in rural settlements and villages, including Hato, Pinalito, Lo de Reyes, San José Nacahuil, El Tizate, La Lagunilla, Labor Vieja, Petacá, El Carrizal, San Antonio El Ángel, El Guapinol, Los Altares ( Altarcitos), Los Achiotes and Los Vados.
Adjacent municipalities are Chuarrancho in the north, San José del Golfo in the east, Palencia in the southeast, Guatemala City in the south and Chinautla in the west.
The area of the municipality was originally called Yampuc and was disputed between Quiché and Cakchiquel in pre-colonial times . The latter allied themselves with Pedro de Alvarado during the Conquista and briefly gained the upper hand. The current city of San Pedro Ayampuc was founded in 1549 and in 1837 the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name.
