Amatitlán is a city in Guatemala with around 100,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Department of Guatemala . The city is located at the western end of Lake Amatitlán and 27 km south of Guatemala City on the CA 9 motorway to Puerto San José .
As in the case of the neighboring Villa Nueva , Amatitlán is a satellite town of Guatemala City. Most of the working population commutes to the capital or works in the numerous industrial companies that have settled along the CA 9 motorway. Amatitlán is located in the largest free trade zone in Guatemala and has numerous textile companies ( maquilas ). Ormat Industries operates a 28 in Amatitlán megawatts - geothermal power plant . The city has a train station on the railway line, which was closed in 2007 and connects Puerto San José on the Pacific with the capital and Puerto Barrios on the Atlantic.
The 204 km² large municipality extends in the mountainous southwest of the department of Guatemala, criss-crossed by several gorges. The majority of the approximately 125,000 inhabitants live in the city of Amatitlán, the remaining 25,000 in 24 smaller towns on or southwest of the lake. Thanks to the lake, some nature reserves, the Pacaya volcano and the motorway access, tourism is gaining in importance.
Adjacent municipalities are Villa Nueva in the north, Petapa in the northeast via a sea border, and Villa Canales in the east and south. In the southwest, Amatitlán borders on the two municipalities of San Vicente Pacaja and Palín of the Escuintla department , and in the west on Santa María de Jesús , Sacatepéquez .
Amatitlán was created on June 24, 1549 as San Juan Amatitlán by combining five older settlements. On March 20, 1680, the place was raised to a small town ("villa"), the real town charter followed on August 28, 1835. In 1877 Amatitlán became the capital of the department of the same name. After its dissolution, the city and the municipality came to the Department of Guatemala in 1935.
