Santa María de Jesús is a municipality in the Sacatepéquez department in Guatemala . About 18,000 people live in the 34 km² large municipal area, the majority of them in Santa María and a smaller part in the town of Cruz San Antonio.

location

The Cakchiquel town is located 10 km south-south-east of the departmental capital Antigua Guatemala and 55 km south-west of Guatemala City at the foot of the Volcán de Agua at an altitude of around 2,070 m. You can reach Santa María from Antigua via a well-developed, winding, steeply rising road that leads past the property of the first Bishop of Guatemala, Francisco Marroquín (San Juan del Obispo). The 24 km long road from Santa María to Palín on the CA 9 motorway is not paved and can only be tackled with off-road vehicles, especially in the rainy season.

economy

Santa María de Jesús lives mainly from agriculture and tourism. Numerous mountaineers hike from here to the 3,766 m high Agua volcano. There are simple overnight accommodations.

history

Santa María de Jesús was first mentioned in 1540 and was called El Aserradero ("the sawmill") because it was from here that wood was brought to Antigua from the surrounding forests. A first settlement called Pueblo chiquito ("small village") was buried in 1816 and moved to the place El Aserradero, which later received the name of the patroness Santa María de Jesús.
