The ASG Vorwärts Mühlhausen was an army sports community in the GDR , which was based in Mühlhausen / Thuringia in what is now the Unstrut-Hainich district . It was founded in the mid-1950s by the army sports association Vorwärts and dissolved in early 1990. The ASG had sections for boxing, football, handball and equestrian sports.
Handball section
In 1979 the handball players of the ASG Vorwärts managed to qualify for the GDR-wide FDGB handball cup competition 1979/80 . In the first main round, the Mühlhausen team had to compete against the Halle-Neustadt unit. They lost at 25:30 at home and were eliminated from the cup competition.
Football section
The ASG Vorwärts Mühlhausen belonged to a dense network of larger and smaller army sports communities that were spread over the entire area of the GDR. The ASG appeared in football for the first time in 1958, when the team was promoted to the fifth-class district class in Erfurt. In the 1960s, Vorwärts played together with local rivals BSG Motor and BSG Post in the district class, which had meanwhile become fourth class after the second GDR league was closed. In 1967, the ASG Vorwärts rose for the first time in the third-class district league Erfurt , where they could hold for three seasons. In 1974 the footballers reached their first low point when they were relegated to the district league. This was followed by two promotions up to the district league and, in 1977, relegation to the district class. The same process took place in 1982 until the ASG landed in the district class again in 1986. Forward played there until the 1989/90 season, but during the season the army sports community was dissolved as a result of the political change and the football team withdrew.
