Palencia is a small town in Guatemala with around 7,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Department of Guatemala . The place is about 30 kilometers east of Guatemala City at an altitude of 1,340 m.
The 196 km² municipality extends in the eastern mountains of the department of Guatemala. It has a total of around 60,000 inhabitants, most of whom live in rural settlements and villages, including Azaculpilla, Dulce Nombre, El Triunfo, El Paraíso, El Manzanote, El Fiscal, Los Cubes, Buena Vista, Sansur, Plan Grande, Los Planes, Sanguayabá, Los Mixcos, La Concepción, Lo De Silva and Los Tecomates.
Neighboring municipalities are San José del Golfo in the north, San Pedro Ayampuc in the northwest, Guatemala City in the west and San José Pinula in the south. In the northeast, Palencia borders on San Antonio La Paz ( El Progreso ), in the southeast on Mataquescuintla ( Jalapa ).
The name of the place goes back to a certain Mathías de Palencia, who bought an estate here in 1624, which was soon called Hacienda Palencia and later just Palencia. In 1873 the place was raised to a municipality.
