Santa Catarina Pinula is a small town in Guatemala and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the department of Guatemala . The city is located on the southern edge of the metropolitan area of Guatemala City at an altitude of 1,550 m.
The 48 km² municipality extends in the mountains south and southeast of Guatemala City. It is crossed by the CA 1 ( Interamericana ), which leads to El Salvador . Along this trunk road ( Carretera a El Salvador ) there are several luxurious, closely guarded housing estates with a good view of the capital, immediately outside the urban area. The municipality has a total of around 80,000 inhabitants, a large number of whom live in suburban settlements. The settlements and villages include Cuchilla del Carmen, El Carmen, Salvadora I / II, El Pueblito, Nueva Concepción, Puerta Parada, Piedra Parada Cristo Rey, Piedra Parada El Rosario, San José El Manzano, Laguna Bermeja, El Pajón, Manzano La Libertad, Don Justo and Canchón.
Neighboring municipalities are Guatemala City in the northwest and north, San José Pinula in the east, Fraijanes in the southeast and Villa Canales in the southwest.
Santa Catarina Pinula was founded as Pankaj or Pinola in pre-colonial times .
