San Raimundo (also San Raymundo and San Raimundo (de) Las Casillas ) is a small town in Guatemala with around 9,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the department of Guatemala . The place is 34 kilometers north of Guatemala City at an altitude of 1,570 m.

The 114 km² municipality extends in the northern mountains of the department of Guatemala to the Río Motagua , which forms the border to neighboring Baja Verapaz . It has a total of around 27,000 inhabitants, most of whom are cakchiquel . A majority of the people live in rural settlements and villages, including La Ciénaga, Concepción el Ciprés, Llano de la Virgen, Pocomá, El Ciprés, El Carrizal, Estancia Vieja, Vuelta Grande, Estancia de la Virgen and El Zarzal.

Adjacent municipalities are Chuarrancho in the northeast, Chinautla in the southeast, Mixco and San Pedro Sacatepéquez in the south and San Juan Sacatepéquez in the southwest and west. In the north, San Raimundo borders the Municipio Granados (Baja Verapaz) .

Remarks

  1. The place is named after Raimund von Penyafort , who is called Raimundo de Peñafort in Spanish and is not written with "y". However, both spellings of the place name can be found in official documents, although San Raymundo has only recently appeared and is probably due to unauthorized or unconscious changes.
