Friedrich von Wetzlar-Plankenstern

Friedrich Reichsfreiherr von Wetzlar-Plankenstern (born May 22, 1857 in Cilli ; † September 2, 1925 in Klagenfurt ) was mayor of the state capital Klagenfurt.

Life

Friedrich von Wetzlar-Plankenstern was born in the Krain region, his father was the transport manager of the kk private southern railway company in Klagenfurt. Friedrich Wetzlar came into the financial service and in 1898 became State Pay Office Controller and retired unmarried as Financial State Treasurer.

In 1906 he became a local councilor and financial officer in Klagenfurt and the closest collaborator of Mayor Gustav von Metnitz , whose successor he became in 1916 in the middle of the First World War .

During his tenure there was an expansion of the urban food supply and the security of consumer goods. Sixteen bells and the copper roof of the parish church were melted down and schools were converted into hospitals.

In 1917 the Diocesan Museum in Klagenfurt, the Beautification Association and the Hotel Renovation Commission were founded. In the same year the Rosenbergpalais was purchased as the new Klagenfurt town hall.

After the collapse of the monarchy and the end of the world war, there was a defensive battle in Carinthia . Klagenfurt was briefly occupied by Yugoslav troops. On October 10, 1920, the result of the vote was celebrated and that Southern Carinthia remained with Austria. The result was read out on October 14th by Captain Albert Peter-Pirkham in the presence of the provincial administrator, the provincial council, the board of the Carinthian homeland service, the municipal council and the mayor of Wetzlar. During the budget negotiations on January 4, 1921, the municipal council collapsed because the mayor was unable to raise the cash to pay for the municipal employees. Wetzlar then resigned.

Friedrich von Wetzlar-Plankenstern died on September 2, 1925; he was the first mayor of Klagenfurt during the republic.
