Gustav Adolf Ritter von Metnitz (born June 24, 1862 in Grafenstein , † December 23, 1915 in Klagenfurt ) was mayor of Klagenfurt.

Life

Gustav von Metnitz was born as the eldest son of Gustav Karl von Metnitz, owner of Rain Castle near Grafenstein . The family, which came from the ancient Carinthian nobility and whose roots can be traced back to the 12th century, had owned properties in Klagenfurt since the 16th century. Gustav von Metnitz attended the grammar school in Klagenfurt, studied in Vienna Jus and earned a doctoral degree. During his studies in 1882/83 he was a member of the Silesia Vienna fraternity . He then practiced at the financial procuratorate in Klagenfurt and passed the bar exam in 1891. In 1894 he opened his own law firm in Klagenfurt.

In 1895 von Metnitz became a member of the Klagenfurt municipal council, in 1896 a member of the state parliament, and in 1897 deputy governor, he was considered a German-minded Carinthian. He was vice mayor from 1898 to 1905 and was elected mayor of the city in 1909. During his tenure, numerous charities were created, the power station was built, the horse-drawn tram to the Wörthersee was replaced by an electric tram, the funeral and Wörthersee shipping were communalized, the slaughterhouse was built, and the New City Theater was opened in 1910.

Under the motto "Klagenfurt an den Wörthersee", the municipality bought Wörthersee properties under his leadership, for which he was strongly attacked at the time. Today the initiative of the mayor at the time is seen as a beneficial measure for the city, the name "Metnitzstrand" still reminds of it.

Gustav von Metnitz died, still in office, on December 23, 1915 and was buried in the central cemetery Annabichl in field 2, row south, no. He was married to Johanna von Vest (1869–1948), the couple had a son, Hanns, born in 1895, who died on the Italian front in 1918, and four daughters: Erika, married. von Günner (1892–1985), Leonore (Lore) (1897–1901), Gustava (Gusti), m. Roth (1902–1980) and Maria (Mia), married. Nojer (1904-1971).
